The Master and Margarita • Mikhail Bulgakov

I was shopping for something special and came across this US first edition of The Master and Margarita and thought it was beautiful.

There have been dozens of redesigns over the years, most of the first translations have stuck with this image of Behemoth - the name comes from the Behemoth of the Book of Job, a biblical creature symbolising immense, untameable power. Bulgakov, being Bulgakov, turned that into a pistol-wielding cat who argues with waiters and burns down buildings…

…but how to bring it into my world and design something new but recognisable?

For the purposes of this project, I wanted to give it a noir angle and what better place to start than picturing Behemoth as the Devil’s hitman. Sometimes you get what you need over at Adobe Stock and ….
